課程概述

This course aims to familiarize students with English spoken on different
subject matters, in different accents, and on various occasions: from academic,
business, news, to colloquial. We will be acquainted with listening materials
including lectures in classroom, speeches, announcements in aircraft, radio
advertisements, and so forth. Being proficient in this language, you will be
expected to express yourself in English as near-next native speakers,
regardless of the accents you would like to keep up with. To achieve these,
internet resources will be one of the teaching media. There will be activities
as debate, discussion, radio drama, in which you are encouraged to keenly
participate. Students are also advised to drill on listening privately. This is
a student-centered course, so any comment is warmly welcome to make this class
suit your needs and more interesting and creative.

hours per week will be used
for listening practices
through which students will
be acquainted with spoken
English in various accents
and on different topics.
Students will be encouraged
to participate in class
discussion, using internet
resources to improve English.
One to two hours per week to
work on aural assignments
will be the requirement.

discussion on relevant issues
and acquire knowledge and
information on different
fields, and refine note-
taking techniques. This is a
student-centered course, so
any comment is warmly
welcome to make this class
suit your needs and more
interesting and creative.
After all, students are
expected to become an active
learner, which is the key to
the English language.  
課程要求
1. Three absences without
asking for leave (by email)
will result in your failure
of this course.
2. Never be late for classes,
and roll calls (點名) may
begin once the class starts.
Three delays will cause a
deduction of 5 points in your
general grade, in case of the
disturbance caused to your
classmates and the instructor.
3. Late assignment is
STRONGLY discouraged, unless
under extenuating
circumstances. (Being busy
with other courses cannot be
an excuse.) Most assignments
can be found and printed out
from Ceiba.
4. Each group (of 4-5
persons) will be responsible
for 1) making vocabulary
lists and uploading to [作業
區] –[作業觀摩] on Ceiba; 2)
summarizing the reading of
the assigned articles; 3)
sharing your thoughts with
the class.
5. You are warmly welcome to
recommend listening websites
on Ceiba’s [資源分享]區, or
share your ideas on [討論看
板]. The instructor may not
respond to all messages,
while you may earn more
points by being an active
participant and learner. Your
online participation will be
rewarded with points in your
final grade.
6. You are encouraged to
provide articles of any
subject worth studying in
class, if finding any in New
York Times, Asiaweek, Times,
The Economist, etc.
7. The instructor may
occasionally grade your in-
class note-taking exercises.
8. If you found any problems
or inconsistencies in this
syllabus, feel free to let
the instructor know.
